The deposit vs excess question

Most renters focus on the deposit amount. The more important number is the excess — the most you pay if damage occurs, regardless of how much the repair costs.

With a cash deposit model: The deposit is effectively your excess. If the shop claims ฿3,000 in damage, they deduct it from your deposit.

With comprehensive insurance (Bikago model): There is no cash deposit. You pay USD $95 if damage occurs. The insurer covers the remainder.

The better deal is usually: lower or no deposit + known excess, rather than high deposit + no clear excess limit.

Ask specifically: What is the excess? What is the maximum I pay if the bike is damaged?

What questions to ask before agreeing

Before you sign the rental agreement:

  1. What is the exact deposit amount?
  2. When is it returned — same day or after inspection?
  3. What triggers a deduction from the deposit?
  4. What is the excess if damage occurs?
  5. Who decides the repair cost if there is damage?
  6. Is there a written inspection record signed by both parties?
  7. Is there an alternative to a passport hold?
  8. Does the shop have a clear damage process in writing?

If the shop cannot answer these questions clearly, that is information.

Return process

Be present at the return inspection. Do not drop the keys and leave. The shop should inspect the bike with you and compare it against the pre-departure inspection record.

If the shop identifies damage:

  • Compare the claimed damage against your pre-departure photographs
  • Ask for an itemised repair quote — not a lump sum
  • If the amount seems high, request an independent repair quote from a local mechanic
  • Do not pay under pressure — you have the right to a written explanation
  • Get a written receipt for any deduction made

What to do if the deposit is not returned

A shop can withhold all or part of your deposit if they claim damage occurred. Your protection:

  • Pre-departure photographs and video (every side, every surface, including the underside of the front forks, exhaust pipe, and mirrors)
  • Joint inspection record at pickup — signed by both parties
  • Itemised repair quote with breakdown
  • Written receipt for any payment made

Without these, you have limited recourse if a shop makes an inflated claim. The tourist police (1155) can advise on disputes but the documentation must come from you.

When the deposit is not worth paying

If a shop requires a high cash deposit (above ฿5,000 for a 160cc scooter) without offering a written damage process or clear excess limit, the effective risk to you is higher. Compare the total package: deposit + excess + insurance clarity against a shop with a lower deposit and a clear damage process.

The Bikago alternative

Bikago (Chiang Mai) charges no cash deposit with comprehensive insurance. The excess is USD $95 per incident — this is the most predictable rental model available in Chiang Mai. You know the maximum you pay before you sign.
