Best Scooter for Couples

Two riders, one engine. In Chiang Mai, that math requires an upgrade.

Best Scooter for Couples
THE VERDICT

The Power of Two

Riding as a couple (two-up) in Chiang Mai is a fantastic way to see the North, but it places significant stress on a small scooter. The combined weight of two adults typically exceeds 150kg. On a budget 125cc scooter, that payload makes mountain climbs slow and descents dangerous.

For most couples, the Honda ADV 160 or Honda PCX 160 is the correct choice. They offer a larger seat “real estate” for the passenger, rear footpegs that are actually usable, and a 160cc engine that won’t overheat while climbing Doi Suthep. If you are riding together, do not compromise on the bike class.

Passenger Rule
The passenger is the co-pilot, not just cargo. In Chiang Mai, the passenger should stay “neutral” in corners—don’t lean with the bike, but don’t fight it either. The biggest risk for couples is the passenger shifting weight suddenly during a slow-speed turn.
TECHNICAL COMPARISON

Why 160cc wins for couples

When you add a second person, the suspension and braking systems are pushed to their limits. A city scooter is designed for one person and a bag of groceries. An Adventure scooter is designed for a day trip with a passenger.

Rear Suspension Reservoirs

The ADV 160 features “Sub-tank” rear suspension. When you add a passenger, the rear compresses (sag). Standard city scooters often “bottom out” on small bumps with two people. The ADV handles the extra load perfectly.

Avoiding the “Pogo”

Cheap scooters with passengers can bounce uncontrollably after a bump, ruining handling in corners. A planted 160cc bike with remote reservoirs stays settled, keeping both riders safe and preventing spine-hits.

THE 125CC TRAP

Why “Budget” is expensive

A 125cc Click costs 250 THB. An ADV 160 costs 500 THB. Saving $7 seems smart until you hit a 15% gradient on the Samoeng Loop and the bike is struggling to do 15 kph.

Tip from the EditorKai Mercer / Ride Chiang Mai

If you want to end your relationship quickly, rent a 110cc Scoopy for two people and try to ride up Doi Suthep. If you want a fun, memorable day out, rent the ADV 160 or NMAX and enjoy the scenery instead of stressing about the engine heat.

Lots of stops, viewpoints, and coffee breaks along excellent paved roads. This route perfectly suits the 160cc Adventure class.

Huay Tung Tao

#3
Flat & Easy

A straight, flat road leading to a beautiful lake surrounded by bamboo huts. The perfect easy lunch date ride for newer couples.

"Specs help, but condition matters more. Before you head to the hills, check the tires, squeeze the brakes, and make sure the bike feels manageable at a stop. Safety in Chiang Mai isn't found in a brochure."
