Touring Scooters
THE VERDICT

The Mile Munchers

Choose a 300cc+ Touring scooter if your plans involve Doi Inthanon, Chiang Dao, or the full Mae Hong Son Loop (all 1,864 curves). These are “maxi-scooters”—bikes designed for high-speed stability and all-day comfort that a standard 125cc bike simply cannot match.

The jump from 160cc to 300cc isn’t just about speed; it’s about physical presence. On the highway sections of Route 108 or 107, these heavier bikes sit firmly on the road, unaffected by the wind-blast of passing trucks or mountain gusts. If you are doing a “Big Loop,” the extra 50kg of weight is an asset, not a liability.

Field Note
Forza and XMAX models are physically wide. If you have a short reach or zero experience with heavy bikes, the low-speed handling in Old City traffic can feel intimidating. Master the center of gravity before heading to the curves.
DECISION FORK

Which 300cc bike is right for you?

The “Maxi” class is dominated by three machines. While they all offer roughly 28-30 horsepower, they differ significantly in suspension travel, technology, and seat height. In this class, dual-channel ABS is standard—safety is already baked in.

PERFORMANCE

Class Breakdown

We rate the Touring class as the “High Energy” choice. These bikes are built to stay calm at 100kph and flatten out the steepest mountain gradients.

Highway Stability
5

Rock solid. Unaffected by crosswinds or the air blast from passing trucks.

Mountain/Hill Margin
5

Exceptional. Overtaking slower trucks on steep hills is effortless and safe.

Two-up (Couples) Comfort
5

First class. Massive seats and foot-forward ergonomics for both rider and pillion.

City Traffic Agility
1.5

Difficult. The width and 180kg+ weight make filtering in the Moat a serious workout.

ENGINEERING

The “Showstopper” Features

RELAX

Feet-Forward Ergonomics

Maxi-scooters allow you to stretch your legs forward like an armchair. This prevents the hip and knee cramping that occurs on smaller bikes after two hours in the saddle.

UTILITY

Massive Under-seat Storage

Standard scooters have a small ‘U-Box.’ Touring scooters have a cavern. Most models fit two full-face helmets, meaning you can store your jackets and gloves when you stop for lunch.

CRUISE

Adjustable Screens

The Forza and ADV models feature screens that reduce wind blast at 100kph. Keeping the wind off your chest reduces rider fatigue significantly on 300km+ loops.

SAFETY

Dual-Channel ABS

In this class, ABS monitors both wheels. Combined with wider tires and heavier curb weight, this class provides the most stable braking performance on unpredictable mountain roads.

Tip from the EditorKai Mercer / Ride Chiang Mai

Speed isn’t the goal here—comfort is. A calm bike makes for a sharp rider. If you’re doing the Mae Hong Son loop, the extra rental cost of a 300cc bike is the best ‘safety insurance’ you can buy.

FINAL VERDICT

The Rankings

Honda ADV 350

#1
The Prime Winner

The perfect long-distance tool for Northern Thailand. The Showa suspension with remote reservoirs is built for Thai road realities (potholes and patches), and the 330cc engine never feels stressed. It’s the most capable all-rounder in the fleet.

Yamaha XMAX 300

#2
The Sporty Specialist

Lighter and lower than the Honda competitors, the XMAX feels more agile in the curves. It’s the favorite for solo riders who want a sportier feel without the bulk of a Forza.

Note
Verify if stalling recall has been addressed on Thailand-spec bikes if concerned.

Honda Forza 350

#3
The Tech Cruiser

The most refined ‘road-couch’ you can rent. Features an electric adjustable screen and the smoothest engine delivery in class. It’s built for the highway, but the low ground clearance means you should stick to paved roads.

"Specs help, but condition matters more. Before you head to the hills, check the tires, squeeze the brakes, and make sure the bike feels manageable at a stop. Safety in Chiang Mai isn't found in a brochure."
